why can I not get through this book?
Why can I not get through the Hemingses of Monticello? It's good, it's just so how do you say it- non-fiction.

The atmosphere that Bolano creates is always heavy and dark. This is not a page turner- each sentence is so full of detail that in order to fully appreciate its complexity, you have to read it slowly. It is also one of the most stressful novels I have ever read, largely in part due to the part about the murders. I also, admittedly am slightly obsessed with this book- I don't know exactly how to pinpoint to what or wherein my obsession lies, but it is something creepy yet intriguing that makes me love this book. He is one of the most phenomenal modern authors I have read. I am so happy that I have bought the book, so that I can continue to reread sections of it. It is slightly mystical, yet very real.
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
I had so many people recommend this book to me, but I must say I was happier to have finished the book than be actually reading it... I understand the whole stream-of-consciousness writing styles, but this was a bit like neurotic brain vomit, which certain passages, don't get me wrong, were really good- the best parts of the book include times when he realizes how stupid and terrible some of his most inner thoughts are, but at times, like every time he would go on about how he was sure his little brother was being tortured and molested because he left him alone at home or wherever, I wanted to fling the book and scream you're being ridiculous. And some of the things he actually did or said were a bit, let's say odd and fake... it was like seeing the innermost thoughts of an over-analytical man who thinks he's too cool, and makes excuses for all his failings hoping that everyone will pity him for his tragic losses. Some of it is written quite brilliantly, but it just keeps going and going...to the point of being a little indulgent and what I think he wants from people in the end- attention.
